Switching Propane Suppliers: How It Works and What to Expect

Switching propane suppliers is more routine than most people expect. Here's how it typically goes.

1. Check who owns your tank

If you own your tank, switching is simplest — your new supplier just starts filling it. If you lease it from your current supplier, your new provider can usually install one of theirs (a swap-out).

2. Sign up and schedule

You complete an application, and the new supplier schedules a tank set or first fill — often within a couple of weeks. Rush requests can usually be flagged.

3. The swap-out (if needed)

If you're switching tanks, the old supplier removes theirs and the new one installs and tests a replacement. Reputable suppliers coordinate this cleanly.

4. You're on the new rate

From your first fill, you're on the new pricing. With Propane Alliance, that means wholesale-linked pricing, free monitoring, and no long-term contract — so if it ever stops working for you, you're never trapped.

Worried about gaps in service? Plan the switch outside peak winter if you can, and keep your tank above a quarter during the transition.
